The end of the year provides a natural space for reflection. No matter where you are in your career journey, these moments to pause and evaluate are a crucial part of building an intentional path toward your goals. Whether you’re aiming for that next promotion, considering a job search to take on new challenges or working to inspire your team, we all have opportunities to grow.
Asking yourself the right questions and pairing your answers with actionable steps are the key to success – try starting with these five.
What did I accomplish this year and what am I most proud of?
We often breeze past our wins without taking time to fully acknowledge our everyday progress. After all, growth doesn’t come in leaps and bounds – it’s about small, consistent improvements that build over time.
Try this: Make a list of all accomplishments, big or small. You’ll be surprised by how much you achieve.Think about how you’ve communicated, mentored, navigated conflict, or managed your priorities. You may be surprised by how many things make the list.
What drained me and what energized me?
Energy is more than just a buzzword. It’s the data that can help you make decisions about where to lean in, or where to pull back. Understanding these patterns helps you identify where to make shifts, whether that’s delegating differently or seeking new opportunities.
Try this: Make two columns on a sheet of paper labeled “energizers” and “drainers.” Fill each column over the next week and review for patterns.
Where did I surprise myself this year, and where did I hold back?
Growth isn’t always what we expect, and sometimes we find growth faster or in areas we didn’t anticipate. It could be as simple as speaking up more in meetings, taking on new responsibilities or delivering candid feedback.
On the other hand, noticing areas where you avoided growth can reveal just as much about where you’re headed. Was there specific feedback you ignored, opportunities you turned down or things you consistently procrastinated?
Try this: Write down three areas where you stretched this year, and one where you felt stuck.
Does my career still align with the life I want?
Careers evolve, and so do people. It’s important to take stock of your personal and professional life side-by-side. Does the career you’re building align with your values, allow space for your priorities and fill your energy tank? If it doesn’t, it could be time for a change.
Try this: Revisit the personal and career goals you set at the beginning of this year. Circle any that feel outdated, unmotivating or misaligned.
What habits do I need to thrive next year?
Success is shaped by consistent habits and small improvements, not big resolutions. Identify which routines supported you this year, which held you back and what new behaviors you need to create momentum next year. A small, intentional shift can create massive change over time.
Try this: Choose one habit to start, one to stop and one to strengthen. Set up reminders and systems to help you achieve those steps.
